More Than Letters and Numbers: The Emotional Side of the Summer Slide

When we talk about the summer slide, we usually think of kids forgetting what they’ve learned in school. But there’s another kind of slide that matters just as much: the social and emotional one.

Without the structure of school, routines, or time with friends, children can feel a little off. They might get more irritable, anxious, or withdrawn. That’s why summer isn’t just a time to prevent learning loss. It’s also a time to care for your child’s well-being.

Here are 5 simple ways to support their social and emotional development this summer:

1. Keep (just enough) routine

You don’t need a strict schedule, but small daily habits can make a big difference. A consistent morning ritual, afternoon rest time, or bedtime routine helps kids feel safe and secure.

2. Let them spend time with others

Playing with others helps kids feel connected. A trip to the playground or a playdate can do wonders. Time with a sibling, cousin, or you also counts.

3. Help them express how they feel

Summer can stir up big emotions. Maybe they miss their classmates. Maybe days feel too long. Give them space to share their feelings through talking, drawing, or play.

4. Keep it playful

It’s great to keep up some math or literacy practice during summer, but it doesn’t need to feel like school, for you or your child. If your child is enjoying it, that’s great. If not, it’s okay to take a step back. Keep things light, fun, and pressure-free for both of you. For some inspiration, check out our post with playful ways to keep learning going.

5. Use screen time when it helps

When you’re overwhelmed during summer juggling work, chores, and keeping your child engaged all day, thoughtful digital tools can help. Apps like WonJo Kids offer games and videos that support not only math and literacy but also emotional growth. They are not a replacement for offline play or social connection, but they can give you a moment to breathe while still enriching your child’s day.
