Curriculum
Continent and Oceans
Children will be able to recognize and locate the seven continents and the five oceans on a map or globe. They will learn the names of the continents—Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, Australia, and South America—and the names of the oceans—Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Arctic. For example, children will be able to point out where each continent and ocean is located and describe some basic characteristics of each
Cardinal Directions
Children will be able to name and identify the basic cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West. They will understand what a compass is and how it functions. For example, children will learn that a compass needle always points north and how to use this information to determine other directions.
Properties of Matter
Children will be able to describe and compare the properties of different types of matter, including solids, liquids, and gases. They will learn that solids have a fixed shape, liquids take the shape of their container but have a fixed volume, and gases spread out to fill their container.
Properties of Water
Children will begin to explore and investigate the properties of water. They wills see how water can turn into ice when it's cold.Watch ice melt back into water when it gets warm.Play with water to see how it moves.Notice how water can turn into steam when it's hot.
Density and Buoyancy
Children will explore and begin to identify the physical properties and states of matter of various objects or materials. Children will investigate sinking and floating objects to learn about density and buoyancy.
Types of Motion
Children will begin to explore and understand a greater variety of motions with objects, including rotating, spinning, and twisting. For example, they will observe how a top spins, how a wheel rotates, and how a rope twists.
Speed of Motion
Children will explore the concept of motion and use basic words to describe the speed of motion, such as "fast" and "slow." For example, they will observe and compare how different objects move at varying speeds, such as how a rolling ball can move fast or slow depending on the push it receives.
Forces and Interactions: Pushes and Pulls
Children will understand that a force is a push or a pull, and it's what makes things around us move or stop.
Children will be able to explain that the strength or direction of a push or pull (force) can change the motion of an object (speed, direction, distance).
Forces and Interactions: Pushes and Pulls
Children will be able to identify and describe different types of motion, including straight line, zigzag, back-and-forth, round-and-round, fast, and slow. They will understand that the way an object moves depends on how it is pushed or pulled. Children will provide real-life examples of different kinds of motion and will plan and conduct investigations to compare the effects of different strengths or directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object.
Five Senses and Organs
Children will be able to recognize and name the five senses and the body parts that help us with each sense: eyes for seeing, nose for smelling, mouth for tasting, ears for hearing, and skin for touching. They will start to understand that these senses help us explore the world around us. For example, they will learn that eyes help us see things like toys and colors, the nose helps us smell flowers and food, the mouth helps us taste yummy snacks, the ears help us hear sounds like music and voices, and the skin helps us feel things like soft blankets or cold water
